Previous Year Question

Which of the following pairs is correctly matched?

Minerals — Producing Areas

A.

Copper — Arizona

B.

Coal — Carajas

C.

Iron Ore — Rastanura

D.

Petroleum — Donbas

Correct Answer: A

Detailed Solution

Arizona is an extremely important copper-producing region of the United States. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, Arizona is the leading copper-producing state in the United States and contains major porphyry copper deposits. Even in recent years, a very large share of U.S. copper production has continued to come from Arizona.

Carajas–Coal is not correct. The Carajás Mineral Province of Brazil is one of the world's major iron-ore regions. Giant high-grade iron ore deposits such as Serra Norte and Serra Sul occur here; therefore, Carajás is principally associated with Iron Ore, not Coal.

Iron Ore–Rastanura is also incorrect. The English paper prints the name as “Rastanura”; geographically, the reference is to Ras Tanura. Ras Tanura in Saudi Arabia is a major petroleum refining and oil-terminal centre. Saudi Aramco's refinery there began operations in 1945; it is not an iron-ore producing area.

Petroleum–Donbas is also incorrect. The Donbas/Donets Basin has historically been a major coal-producing region. According to the U.S. EIA, a large proportion of Ukraine's coal reserves occurs in the Donbas-Donets Basin.
