C.

Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).

D.

(A) is true, but (R) is false.

Correct Answer: C

Detailed Solution

Assertion (A) is correct. Jute is an important natural fibre crop with an ancient association with the Indian subcontinent. India has a long tradition of jute cultivation and manufacture of jute products.

Reason (R) is also correct. Jute is mainly a Kharif crop. Depending on the region and growing conditions, it is sown approximately between February and June, and the crop is generally harvested between July and October.

However, the fact that a crop is Kharif and has particular sowing and harvesting months does not explain its indigenous origin. These facts describe its cropping season and cultivation cycle, not its place of origin.
