Previous Year Question

Farming of cloves is done in

A.

Kerala

B.

Karnataka

C.

Tamil Nadu

D.

Uttar Pradesh

Correct Answer: C

Detailed Solution

Clove is scientifically known as Syzygium aromaticum. The commercial clove is actually the dried, fully grown but unopened flower bud of the clove tree.

In India, cloves are grown mainly in the hilly tracts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. The crop prefers a humid tropical climate, good rainfall and well-drained loamy soils.

According to Spices Board data for 2010-11, Tamil Nadu recorded about 765 hectares under clove with a production of 714 tonnes, the highest production among Indian states in that year. Clove cultivation was also recorded in Karnataka and Kerala.

Important fact: The literal wording “Farming of cloves is done in” is not completely exclusive, because official data show that cloves are cultivated in Kerala and Karnataka as well as Tamil Nadu. Therefore, Tamil Nadu should be understood here as the expected examination answer.
