Previous Year Question
Who among the following was NOT an early member of the ‘Naujawan-Sabha’ formed in 1926 A.D.?
Bhagat Singh
Yaspal
Chhabil Das
Ambika Chakravarti
Correct Answer: D
Detailed Solution
The Naujawan Bharat Sabha was founded at Lahore in March 1926 by Bhagat Singh and his revolutionary associates. Its objective was to develop nationalist and revolutionary consciousness among young people and organise them against British imperialism.
The Sabha was particularly active among the youth, students and workers of Punjab. Its programme emphasised anti-imperialism, social equality, opposition to communalism and the political education of young people.
Bhagat Singh, Yashpal and Chhabil Das were associated with its early phase. Bhagat Singh was one of the principal driving forces behind the organisation.
In contrast, Ambika Chakravarti belonged to the Chittagong revolutionary group in Bengal. He was an associate of Surya Sen and was among those who led the attack on the Telephone and Telegraph Office during the Chittagong uprising of 18 April 1930.
Ambika Chakravarti was subsequently sentenced to transportation for life in connection with the Chittagong Armoury case and was imprisoned in the Cellular Jail.
A useful organisational distinction is therefore—Naujawan Bharat Sabha = Lahore/Punjab and Bhagat Singh's circle, whereas Ambika Chakravarti = Chittagong/Bengal and Surya Sen's circle.
