The Deoband Movement is considered to have begun in 1866 at Deoband in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. Its institutional base was Darul Uloom Deoband, which was also established in 1866.

Prominent Islamic scholars associated with the movement included Maulana Muhammad Qasim Nanautavi and Maulana Rashid Ahmad Gangohi.

The background of the Deoband Movement was connected with the political and social conditions following the Revolt of 1857. Its principal objective was to preserve Islamic religious education and culture and to promote religious and educational revival among Muslims.

Instead of depending on government assistance, Darul Uloom developed an educational system supported mainly through public contributions and donations. This enabled the institution to function independently of the British Government.

The educational tradition that began at Deoband later spread to other places, and numerous madrasas and scholars associated with it contributed to the development of a wider Deobandi school of thought.
