The Lieutenant Governor of Bengal at the time of Partition of Bengal was
Sir Andrews Fraser
H.H. Risley
Brodrick
A.T. Arundel
Correct Answer: A
Detailed Solution
Sir Andrew Henderson Leith Fraser was the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal at the time of the Partition of Bengal. He had been heading the Bengal administration since 1903 and was also associated with the administrative process through which the partition scheme was developed.
The Partition of Bengal was implemented during the viceroyalty of Lord Curzon. It was formally announced on 19 July 1905 and came into effect on 16 October 1905.
After the partition, a new province called Eastern Bengal and Assam was created with Dacca as its capital. Its first Lieutenant-Governor was Sir Bampfylde Fuller. Therefore, Andrew Fraser should not be confused with Bampfylde Fuller.
The partition faced widespread opposition and gave a major impetus to the Swadeshi and Boycott Movement. Boycott of foreign goods and promotion of indigenous products became important instruments of nationalist mobilisation.
An important distinction is that H. H. Risley was also closely associated with the administrative planning of the Bengal partition, but the person asked for in the question—the Lieutenant-Governor of Bengal—was Sir Andrew Fraser.
