Correct Answer: C
Detailed Solution
On 3 June 1947, Viceroy Lord Mountbatten announced a plan to resolve the constitutional deadlock in India, commonly known as the 3 June Plan or Mountbatten Plan.
The plan accepted that maintaining India under a single constitutional arrangement had become impracticable and laid down the process for the partition of India and the creation of two separate political entities, India and Pakistan.
Under the plan, the Legislative Assemblies of Punjab and Bengal were provided a procedure to decide whether their provinces should be partitioned. In case of partition, Boundary Commissions were to determine the boundaries.
It also provided for a referendum in the NWFP and procedures concerning the future position of Sind and British Baluchistan.
The British Parliament subsequently passed the Indian Independence Act, 1947, and in August 1947 the two Dominions of India and Pakistan came into existence.
Thus, although the Mountbatten Plan formed part of the wider process of transfer of power, its specific historical basis in this question was the partition of the country.
