Mahatma Gandhi

B.

Rabindranath Tagore

C.

Shankaran Nair

D.

Jamnalal Bajaj

Correct Answer: C

Detailed Solution

Sir Chettur Shankaran Nair was an Indian member of the Viceroy's Executive Council. In 1919, he resigned from the Council in protest against the developments in Punjab, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the subsequent repression and Martial Law.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place on 13 April 1919 at Amritsar. It was followed by severe administrative measures and Martial Law in Punjab, generating widespread opposition.

According to the official chronology, in July 1919, Shankaran Nair resigned his membership of the Executive Council in protest against the undue prolongation of Martial Law. His resignation represented an important protest from within the British Indian administration.

He should not be confused with Rabindranath Tagore. Tagore also strongly protested against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, but he renounced his Knighthood; he did not resign from the Viceroy's Executive Council.

Therefore, the person who resigned from the Viceroy's Executive Council was Shankaran Nair.
