A.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak

B.

Lala Lajpat Rai

C.

Motilal Nehru

D.

Chitranjan Das

Correct Answer: A

Detailed Solution

Issues such as the Rowlatt Act, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the Khilafat question formed an important background to the Non-Cooperation Movement. Gandhi developed non-cooperation with British rule into a wider political programme.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak died on 1 August 1920 in Bombay. At this time, Gandhi's programme of non-cooperation was entering its initial phase.

Subsequently, the Calcutta Special Session of September 1920 approved the Non-Cooperation resolution, while the Nagpur Session of December 1920 gave the movement a more organised basis.

Thus, Tilak did not live to see the movement develop into a widespread mass movement and witness its consequences during 1920–22.
