The First Carnatic War was fought during 1746–1748 between the English and French East India Companies in South India. It was essentially the Indian extension of the War of Austrian Succession being fought in Europe.

During the war, the French captured Madras in September 1746. Madras was occupied with the assistance of the French naval force and its capture was one of the major events of the First Carnatic War.

The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 ended the War of Austrian Succession in Europe. With the end of the European war, the First Carnatic War being fought in India also came to an end.

Under the treaty, Madras was returned to the British. In exchange, the British restored the French possession of Louisbourg in North America to France. Therefore,

The treaty did not permanently end Anglo-French rivalry in India. Intervention by both powers in the succession disputes of Hyderabad and the Carnatic soon resulted in the Second Carnatic War.
