Previous Year Question

Who among the following Gupta Kings had another name Devagupta?

A.

Samudragupta

B.

Chandragupta II

C.

Kumaragupta

D.

None of the above

Correct Answer: B

Detailed Solution

The correct answer is Chandragupta II.

The Gupta emperor Chandragupta II, commonly known also as Vikramaditya, is referred to in epigraphic evidence by the names Devagupta as well as Devaraja.

This is confirmed particularly by Vakataka inscriptions. Chandragupta II's daughter Prabhavatigupta was married to the Vakataka ruler Rudrasena II. In Vakataka copper-plate records relating to Prabhavatigupta and her descendants, her father is referred to as Maharajadhiraja Devagupta. Epigraphists identify this Devagupta with Chandragupta II Vikramaditya.

In the Sanchi inscription, another name of Chandragupta II appears as Devaraja. Thus, both Devagupta and Devaraja occur in epigraphic evidence in association with Chandragupta II.

Chandragupta II was the son of Samudragupta. He defeated the Western Kshatrapas and incorporated the regions of Gujarat, Kathiawar and western Malwa into the Gupta Empire. His victory over the Sakas also contributed to traditions associating him with titles such as Vikramaditya and Sakari.
