Qubit अर्थात quantum bit, quantum computing में सूचना की मूल इकाई है। Classical computing में bit केवल दो निश्चित अवस्थाओं—0 अथवा 1—में से किसी एक में होता है। इसके विपरीत, qubit quantum superposition के कारण 0 और 1 की संयुक्त अवस्था में रह सकता है।

Qubit की सामान्य अवस्था को गणितीय रूप में

से प्रदर्शित किया जाता है, जहाँ 𝛼 और 𝛽 probability amplitudes हैं तथा ∣𝛼∣² + ∣𝛽∣² =1 होता है। Measurement करने पर qubit से 0 अथवा 1 में से कोई एक परिणाम प्राप्त होता है।

Quantum computers में qubits के बीच entanglement भी स्थापित किया जा सकता है। Superposition, entanglement और interference का उपयोग करके quantum computer कुछ विशिष्ट समस्याओं में अनेक संभावनाओं को classical computer से भिन्न ढंग से process कर सकता है।

Qubits को superconducting circuits, trapped ions, photons, neutral atoms अथवा quantum dots जैसी विभिन्न physical systems के माध्यम से बनाया जा सकता है। Qubits अत्यंत संवेदनशील होते हैं; environmental interaction से उनकी quantum अवस्था नष्ट होने की प्रक्रिया को decoherence कहा जाता है। इसलिए quantum error correction और अत्यंत नियंत्रित operating conditions आवश्यक होते हैं।

Cloud services, visible-light communication और wireless communication में भी advanced computing तथा communication technologies का उपयोग होता है, लेकिन ‘qubit’ उनकी मूल सूचना इकाई नहीं है।
