Previous Year Question

With reference to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), consider the following statements:

I. All types of UAVs can do vertical landing.
II. All types of UAVs can do automated hovering.
III. All types of UAVs can use battery only as a source of power supply.

How many of the statements given above are correct?

A.

Only one

B.

Only two

C.

All the three

D.

None

Correct Answer: D

Detailed Solution

All three statements are incorrect.

Statement I is incorrect. All UAVs cannot perform vertical landing. Multirotor UAVs and specialized VTOL aircraft can perform vertical landing, but conventional fixed-wing UAVs may require a runway, landing strip, parachute, net-recovery or another recovery system.

Statement II is incorrect. Automated hovering is mainly a capability of multirotor, helicopter and certain VTOL UAVs. A conventional fixed-wing UAV must keep moving forward to maintain aerodynamic lift; therefore, all UAVs cannot hover.

Statement III is incorrect. The power supply of UAVs is not limited to batteries. Depending on their size, endurance and mission, UAVs may use battery-electric motors, internal-combustion engines, aviation fuel, fuel cells, solar power and hybrid propulsion systems.
