Previous Year Question

The one-hundred-rupee note is signed by whom?

A.
Finance Minister
B.
RBI Governor
C.
Finance Secretary
D.
President of India

Correct Answer: B

Detailed Solution

The ₹100 Indian banknote bears the signature of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Official RBI currency material records that banknotes of different denominations carry the signature of the Governor, Reserve Bank of India. For example, RBI's official description of the ₹500 banknote explicitly states that it bears the RBI Governor's signature. The same arrangement applies to the ₹100 RBI banknote.

The reason is that the RBI regulates the issue of banknotes in India. The basic functions of the RBI include the issue of banknotes and management of the currency system. Therefore, RBI-issued banknotes such as ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200 and ₹500 bear the signature of the RBI Governor.

Important exception: the ₹1 note is not signed by the RBI Governor. The ₹1 currency note is issued by the Government of India and bears the signature of the Finance Secretary. An official RBI press release also records the bilingual signature of the Finance Secretary on the ₹1 note. ₹1 = Finance Secretary; RBI banknotes such as ₹100 = RBI Governor.
