UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It is an international environmental treaty established under the United Nations framework to address climate change. According to the official UNFCCC record, the Convention was adopted at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 9 May 1992 and was subsequently opened for signature at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992.

The Convention entered into force on 21 March 1994. Its central objective is to stabilize greenhouse-gas concentrations at a level that would prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The UNFCCC currently has virtually universal membership, with 198 Parties.

Major international climate arrangements such as the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement were later developed under the UNFCCC process.
