The Government of India introduced the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) in 2008. According to the official NAPCC document of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the plan was structured around Eight National Missions, representing long-term and integrated strategies for addressing climate change while pursuing sustainable development.

The original eight missions are the National Solar Mission, National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency, National Mission on Sustainable Habitat, National Water Mission, National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem, Green India Mission, National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture, and National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change.

An important distinction is that NAPCC itself was introduced in 2008 with the framework of eight National Missions; this does not imply that every mission's detailed implementation began on the same day. Detailed mission documents and implementation arrangements were developed subsequently.
