Lake Turkana is located in Kenya and is regarded as the world's largest desert lake. According to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, it is the most saline lake in East Africa and the largest desert lake in the world. The surrounding region is extremely arid and desert-like.

Lake Turkana lies mainly in northern Kenya. According to UNEP, it forms part of the Omo–Turkana Basin, and a major share of its water is supplied by the Omo River in Ethiopia. UNESCO has inscribed Sibiloi National Park, Central Island National Park and South Island National Park collectively as the Lake Turkana National Parks World Heritage property.
