The Salal Hydroelectric Project is located on the Chenab River. According to the official information of NHPC Limited, a Government of India public-sector hydropower company, Salal Power Station is a run-of-the-river project designed to harness the hydropower potential of the Chenab River. It is located in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Salal Power Station has a total installed capacity of 690 MW, consisting of 3 × 115 MW units each in Stage-I and Stage-II. NHPC's official records also describe the Salal Hydroelectric Project as utilising the drop in the lower reaches of the Chenab River for power generation.
