Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is built across the Krishna River. The Government of India's India-WRIS records Nagarjuna Sagar Dam under the Krishna Basin and explicitly identifies its river as the Krishna River. It is an important multipurpose project primarily associated with irrigation and hydroelectric power generation.

The Krishna is one of the major east-flowing rivers of Peninsular India. The Nagarjuna Sagar Reservoir is situated on this river. India-WRIS information on inter-basin water-transfer proposals also explicitly refers to the Nagarjunasagar reservoir on the Krishna River.
