Correct Answer: C

Detailed Solution

Mahatma Gandhi was sentenced to six years of simple
imprisonment in 1922.

In February 1922, following the violent incident at Chauri Chaura, Gandhi decided to withdraw the Non-Cooperation Movement. According to NCERT, Gandhi felt that the movement was becoming violent in many places and that the satyagrahis required further training before they were ready for large-scale mass struggles.

Subsequently, Gandhi was arrested on 10 March 1922 and
taken to Sabarmati Jail. He was charged under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code for sedition on the basis of articles published in Young India.

On 18 March 1922, the trial was held at the Circuit House in Ahmedabad. Judge C. N. Broomfield sentenced Gandhi to six years of simple imprisonment. Shankerlal Banker, the printer and publisher associated with Young India, was tried with him and sentenced to one year's imprisonment.
