Previous Year Question
Who among the following started the Bhoodan-Gramdan Movement?
Correct Answer: B
Detailed Solution
The Bhoodan Movement was initiated by Acharya Vinoba
Bhave in 1951. Government sources also identify Acharya Vinoba Bhave as the initiator of the Bhoodan Yagna Movement.
The movement had its historic beginning at Pochampalli on
18 April 1951. When landless families expressed their need for land, a local landowner, Ram Chandra Reddy, offered to donate 100 acres of land. This event is regarded as the genesis of the Bhoodan Movement.
Bhoodan means the voluntary gift of land. Vinoba Bhave travelled across India persuading landowners to voluntarily donate land for the landless. The movement later developed into the Gramdan Movement, extending the idea of voluntary land donation to the village community as a whole.
Jayaprakash Narayan later became deeply associated with the movement, but he was not its founder.
