Previous Year Question

Where was the Congress session held in which Mahatma Gandhi convinced other leaders of the need to start a Non-Cooperation Movement in support of Khilafat as well as Swaraj?

A.
Calcutta
B.
Bombay
C.
Nagpur
D.
Lahore

Correct Answer: A

Detailed Solution

A special session of the Congress was held at Calcutta in September 1920. At this session, Mahatma Gandhi convinced other Congress leaders of the need to launch the Non-Cooperation Movement in support of Khilafat as well as for Swaraj. NCERT records this explicitly.

The special session was presided over by Lala Lajpat Rai. The official records of the Indian National Congress also identify Lala Lajpat Rai as the president of the 1920 Calcutta Special Session and record the Non-Cooperation Resolution as its principal resolution.

Important Fact: The Nagpur Session of December 1920 came later, when the Non-Cooperation programme was further accepted and organised by the Congress. Therefore, Calcutta and Nagpur should not be confused in this question.
